About

This service was begun in August 1995 when the Community Support Work concept was introduced to New Zealand. Community Support Workers (CSWs) are mobile and work with clients who live in the community.

This service complements what is provided by the public health system (Northland DHB). Staff from Northland DHB focus on mental state, medication and risk, while the CSWs from Arataki Ministries work with the client and their family to maintain wellness and to live full and satisfying lives. This means we include the whole person: the mental, physical, social, cultural and spiritual domains. We are a mainstream organisation (not Kaupapa Maori), but approximately 40% of our staff are Maori. This reflects the population in Northland and our clients.

The CSW service Arataki Ministries provides covers the Whangarei and Kaipara districts and we have offices in Whangarei, Dargaville, and Maungaturoto

Entry

Entry is by referral from any source.  Most come from the DHB, but referrals from the person her/himself, GPs, family/whanau, and other agencies are accepted.

Clients must have a formal diagnosis of mental illness. One requirement is that the person her/himself wants to engage with the CSW. The aim of the client and CSW working together is to maintain wellness and work towards minimal input and dependency on the mental health system. We support the client to achieve their goals. CSWs do not primarily provide a transport service or keep people company. We provide a rehabilitation service for people with mental health and/or addiction issues. In other words, we endeavour to work with people to live well, despite the presence of mental illness or addiction issues.
